Cancel a Request for a Letter of Recommendation
A request can only be canceled or deleted if it hasn't been added to an application or used in a delivery. If the request is attached to an open position and the institution allows application edits, you must remove it from the application first. Requests can then be canceled or deleted from the Materials page in your Dossier account.
If the letter or request is attached to an application and editing rights have been turned off for that position, the request can no longer be canceled.
If you delete a request before it’s fulfilled, the letter writer will automatically be notified via email. If the letter writer attempts to access the request from the original email they received, they will be taken to a blank dossier page with no option to upload a letter. We recommend that the requester reaches out to the letter writer to let them know personally that there is no action for them to take.
Cancel Request
- Navigate to the Deliveries page and click Edit next to the application that the request is attached to.
If the option to edit the application isn't available, the position is closed or the institution has disabled editing. You must contact the institution (not Interfolio) to request edit access.
- Remove the request from any applications it is attached to by selecting the trash icon next to the letter request within Dossier.
You can only remove it from an application if editing permissions for that position are turned on by the institution.
This action removes the letter from the application but does not cancel the request. If attached to an application, the request must be removed first; skip this step if it wasn't attached. The following steps will allow you to cancel the request and notify the letter writer that the letter is no longer needed.
- Navigate to the Materials page and click the Title of the desired letter to preview.
- Select Delete from the Other Options dropdown.
If you cannot select the option to delete a letter or request, it is because the letter is attached to an application. Check out the information above on how to remove the request from applications for further guidance.
