This article describes the difference between Faculty Rank in the Faculty file and Faculty Rank in the Faculty Classification file.
Faculty Rank
Faculty File
The Faculty Rank in the Faculty file is the current rank of the faculty member. Faculty Rank in the Faculty file populates:
- The rank field in the Current Position section.
- The rank field in the Faculty form.
- This is the rank that displays in the header of a faculty vita.
- On the vita output, as an option in the Current Position section, alongside the position title.
- The first rank filter in the Faculty Selection Tool, unless it has been toggled to not use in reporting.
Faculty Classification File
The Faculty Rank in the Faculty Classification file allows for the historical and current rank information of the faculty member. Faculty Rank in the faculty classification file populates:
- The rank linked from the faculty form for faculty classifications.
- On the vita output as an option in the Current Position section (faculty Classifications display here).
- The second rank filter in the Faculty Selection Tool, unless it has not been selected to show as a filter in reporting.

Are both of these fields tied to the same Faculty Classification Faculty Rank dropdown?
No.
- The options for Faculty Rank in the faculty file are determined by the options available for Faculty Rank under Administration > Setup > Details > Faculty Rank.
- The options for the Faculty Rank faculty classification are determined by the options for the faculty classification under Administration > Setup > Faculty Classifications > Faculty Rank.
Can these lists have different values?
Yes, these lists are managed entirely independently.
What happens if they have different values?
Since the lists are maintained and output separately, different lists would beam they would show those different values in the different places that these values show. The lists in the Faculty File and Faculty Classifications File tabs should help clarify where these different outputs are in the platform.
How can I confirm that the faculty will NEVER see the “Awaiting Initial Rank Assignment” value?
“Awaiting Initial Rank Assignment” is from faculty classifications. As long as the faculty classification is not set as an option to display in the Current Position section on the Legacy Vita Setup, there is no way that this value could be surfaced to faculty (assuming the faculty does not have administrative rights to faculty classification reporting).
